Your Past Is Not Your Name

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV

Sometimes people remember us for a part of our past that we have already given to God. Even our own thoughts can remind us of our mistakes, disappointments, or hurts.

But when you belong to Jesus, your true identity comes from Him.

In Philemon, Paul asks Philemon to welcome Onesimus as a beloved brother. His new life in Christ changed how he was to be seen. He was more than his past.

That is the beauty of becoming new in Jesus. You have a place in God’s family. You can acknowledge your past without letting it define you. What happened to you does not make you less worthy of love, and the sins you have confessed do not require a lifetime of punishment.

There may still be healing and rebuilding ahead, but you can take those steps knowing you belong to Christ.

Today, let “I am His” become more familiar than the labels you have carried.

Decree:
I belong to Jesus Christ, and my identity is rooted in Him.
I release the labels that contradict who God calls me to be.
By His grace, I will live today as someone loved, forgiven, and made new.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for receiving me through Jesus. Help me believe that Your grace covers every part of my story. Teach me to stop defining myself by shame and to see myself as Your beloved child. Give me courage to live in the identity You have given me.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
